Furetank and Algoma place order for two more LNG-powered tankers in China

Swedish shipowner Furetank and Canada’s Algoma Central have ordered two more LNG-powered tankers at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou.

FureBear, the 50/50 joint venture between the two firms that ordered four tankers in August, will own these vessels as well.

The Chinese yard will deliver these two new Vinga ships in 2025, according to a statement by Furetank.

Furetank did not reveal the price tag of the order.

Besides these two newbuilds, the JV would also take the two LNG-powered Vinga tankers Furetank ordered at the same yard in September, boosting the total to eight vessels, it said.

Fuertank designed the new dual-fuel ice-class 1A 17,999-dwt product tankers in collaboration with FKAB Marine Design.

All Vinga vessels have dual-fuel capability and run on LNG/LBG or gasoil and have a battery hybrid solution.

Including these new vessels, the Vinga series would now total 17 vessels, Furetank said.

Furetank already owns four and commercially operates all of eight FKAB-designed ice-class product and chemical tankers under Sweden’s Gothia Tanker Alliance.

Upon completion, these FureBear eight vessels will also enter into the alliance, and Furetank will operate them out of Gothenburg, Sweden.

“The expansion of our FureBear investment with Algoma is exciting news. This is yet another endorsement of the environmental benefits and innovative design of our Vinga series”, Lars Höglund, CEO of Furetank, said.
