Hyundai Samho delivers first LNG containership to EPS

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho has delivered the first of six LNG-powered neo-Panamax containerships being built for Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping.

The ship named Tenere goes on charter to CMA CGM such as the other 15,000 TEU vessels scheduled for delivery from Hyundai Samho by 2022.

Futhermore, each of the 366 meters long vessels will feature MAN B&W 11G90 ME-GI main engines. The two-stroke engines can operate both on gas or diesel fuel.

Hyundai Samho, a unit of Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, aims to deliver all the vessels by the third quarter of 2022.

The French firm will use them for the route between Asia and the Mediterranean and they will get chilled fuel from Total as part of a deal signed signed last year.

Teniere now becomes the world’s first delivered large LNG-powered containership but CMA CGM will soon receive an even larger one that is ready for delivery in China.

Once delivered this month, the 23,000 TEU CGM Jacques Saade will take over the trone as the largest LNG-powered containership. This the first out of nine sister vessels.

The shipping group aims to have in total 20 LNG-powered vessels in its fleet by 2022 as it looks to comply with the new IMO standards and slash emissions.

This includes these chartered Eastern Pacific Shipping’s containerships and smaller vessels of 1,400 TEU.
