Japex launches second Soma LNG tank

Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) launched on Monday commercial operations of the second LNG tank and additional regasification facilities at its Soma terminal.

At the same time, the firm and its partners in Fukushima Gas Power started operations at the adjacent second gas-fueled power plant.

Japex, Mitsui & Co, Osaka Gas, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, and Hokkaido Electric Power started building the power plant in 2016.

The first power generation unit at the facility located in Soma Port, Shinchi Town, started operations in April this year.

The power plant’s generation capacity totals 1.18 million kW with each unit having a capacity 0.59 million kW.

The power plant uses regasified LNG for fuel from the adjacent Soma terminal.

With the additional tank, the terminal now features two tanks with a 230,000 kiloliter capacity, jetties, and regas facilities.

Japex is in charge of the terminal’s operation, maintenance, and gas supply to the power plant.
