Besiktas Shipyard says working on first Turkish LNG carrier repair job

Besiktas Shipyard is working on what it says is the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier repair job in Turkey.

The yard in Yalova, a part of Besiktas Shipping Group, said it has last year completed preparations to enter the LNG repair sector with the establishment of a cryogenic workshop and the delivery of the required staff training.

Besiktas Shipyard claims it is the first shipyard in the region providing in-house authorized workshop services such as ABB turbochargers and Woodward governors including cryogenic workshop for LNG repair activities.

In a social media post published last week, the yard said it had welcomed the first-ever LNG ship.

It did not reveal any additional information but the image the yard posted suggests it is the 154,472-cbm LNG Unity, previously known as Provalys.

According to VesselsValue data, French energy giant TotalEnergies sold the 2006-built LNG carrier last year to Turkey’s Karpowership, part of Karadeniz, for an undisclosed price.

In the last two years, Karpowership revealed several LNG-to-power developments which include floating storage and regasification units.

The firm launched its first LNG-to-power project in Indonesia in 2020.

In addition, Karpowership, along with its joint venture partner MOL, delivered KARMOL’s first FSRU to Senegal. Karmol LNGT Powership Africa arrived in Senegal last year to supply LNG to Karpowership’s 235 MW Karadeniz Powership Ayşegul Sultan located alongside the shores of Dakar.

Qatari LNG shipping giant Nakilat also joined forces with Karpowership to collaborate in the LNG-to-power market and jointly own and operate FSRUs.
