Helsinki-based Suomen Lantakaasu is a joint venture between the biomethane company St1 Biokraft and the dairy and food company Valio.
Wartsila said on Thursday that the orders were booked in the first quarter of this year, but it did not provide the price tag.
In addition to the biogas upgrading and liquefaction plants, Wartsila will also supply 300-cbm capacity storage tanks, as well as an export station.
Earlier, Wartsila has only supplied biogas upgrading and biogas upgrading plus liquefaction plants to St1 Biokraft in Sweden and Norway.
These two new biogas plants are greenfield projects and will be built in Nurmo and Kiuruvesi, located in the western and central parts of Finland, respectively.
Also, the two projects will each have the capacity to produce 25 tons of bio-LNG per day, and are expected to be in operation by the second half of 2026.
Wartsila said that when operational, the plants will enable more widespread use of a biogas-powered transport fleet.
Bio-LNG plants
In September 2024, Suomen Lantakaasu and Atria Finland said they would invest more than 60 million euros ($66.1 million) to build what they say is Finland’s first industrial-scale liquefied biogas production plant in Nurmo.
The biogas plant will produce renewable domestic energy and various types of biofertilisers using manure from farms in the region as well as agricultural and food industry byproducts.
In November 2024, Suomen Lantakaasu announced that its plant in Kiuruvesi will produce renewable liquefied biogas from cattle farm manure and from other agricultural and food industry byproducts.
The Kiuruvesi biogas plant is part of the Upper Savo complex that includes the industrial-scale, centralised liquefied biogas production plant in Kiuruvesi as well as three smaller satellite plants in Lapinlahti, Sonkajarvi, and Nurmes.
Moreover, the total value of the investment in the Upper Savo complex is around 100 million euros ($110 million).
Suomen Lantakaasu said the project had been granted 19.2 million euros in funding from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.
