Fluxys awards Zeebrugge LNG gig to Sacyr Proyecta

Belgium's Fluxys has awarded a new contract to Spain's Sacyr Proyecta for services at its LNG terminal in Zeebrugge, Belgium.

Sacir Proyecta, a unit of Spanish construction firm Sacyr, said the scope of the project includes the installation of new seawater open rack vaporizers (ORV) and their corresponding pumps, together with a new intake caisson at the terminal’s port facilities.

According to the firm, this project aims to reduce CO2 emissions while maintaining the terminal’s sendout capacity and is part of Fluxys’ program to achieve net-zero emissions in its own operations.

Sacyr Proyecta did not reveal the contract price.

In the past, Sacyr Proyecta has executed several projects at the LNG terminal in Zeebrugge with the aim of expanding the plant’s regasification capacity.

Since 2011, Sacyr Proyecta has taken part in projects such as the development of FEED services for the fifth LNG tank, (semi-buried with a 180,000 cbm capacity) and for a second jetty capable of handling loading, unloading and ship-to-ship transfer operations with LNG carriers of various sizes.

Additionally in 2023, Sacyr Proyecta has completed an EPCM project to expand the regasification capacity of the LNG plant to 2.6 million Nm³/h, and in parallel, the installation of new seawater ORVs, enabling the reduction of CO₂ emissions and also the addition of new LNG truck loading stations.

Zeebrugge LNG

In August 2024, Fluxys received the 3000th cargo of LNG at its import facility in the port of Zeebrugge.

In operation since 1987, the Zeebrugge LNG terminal mostly receives shipments from Qatar, USA, and Russia.

Due to the high demand for LNG, Fluxys is expanding the facility, and it has already increased the terminal’s capacity by adding three new open-rack vaporizers.

The capacity has been increased since January 1, 2024 to 11.3 mtpa (15 bcma).

“The additional sendout capacity (1.3 mtpa / 2 bcma) is scheduled to be available on January 1, 2026,” Fluxys said previously.

Last year, US energy giant ConocoPhillips signed a deal with Fluxys to book long-term capacity at the Zeebrugge LNG terminal.

The capacity booking at the terminal will allow ConocoPhillips to import and regasify 0.75 mtpa of LNG for delivery in Belgium and also throughout Europe starting in April 2027.

This deal came after Fluxys offered long-term capacity for 2027-2044 in June 2024.
