The vessel in question is the 135,423-cbm Seapeak Asia, previously known as Seapak Catalunya.
Seapeak Asia was sold on an “as is” basis to an undisclosed demolition buyer.
No further details have been revealed.
According to VesselsValue data, Seapeak Asia’s demolition value is approximately $14 million.
The LNG carrier was located offshore Oman’s Sohar on Monday.
Stonepeak’s Seapeak previously said that it booked restructuring charges in the second and third quarters of this year, primarily due to laying off its Spanish seafarers working on four steam LNG carriers.
The shipping firm booked decreases due to the lay-up of the 2002-built 137,814-cbm Seapeak Hispania, Seapeak Catalunya, and the 2004-built 135,423-cbm Seapeak Madrid, and lower short-term charter rates earned following the scheduled completion of their previous charter contracts.
Spot LNG carrier rates have, in the meantime, jumped with the Spark30S (Atlantic) LNG freight rates rising to new year-to-date highs last week.
As of September 30, these three LNG vessels were classified as held for sale in Seapeak’s September 30, 2025, consolidated balance sheet.
This year has seen a record number of LNG carriers sold for demolition.
LNG shipping firms, including Flex LNG and MISC, said that at least 14 steam LNG carriers have been scrapped to date this year, making this new demolition deal the fifteenth.
MISC also recently sold two steam LNG carriers for demolition.
With nearly 120 steam vessels either open or rolling off contracts over the next few years, Flex expects a wave of further retirements ahead.
