Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Lloyd’s Register (LR) awarded Hudong-Zhonghua with approval in principle (AiP) certificates for a CO2 storage tank and general approval for ship application (GASA) certificates for a CO2 handling system during Marintec China on Tuesday.
Hudong-Zhonghua’s independently developed low-pressure storage system for LCO2 vessels employs a C-type liquid cargo tank design.
Each tank has a capacity of 7,000 cubic meters and can carry liquid carbon dioxide at -55°C.
According to Hudong-Zhonghua, this system is not only suitable for liquid carbon dioxide transport but also compatible with various cargoes such as LPG.
Moreover, the shipbuilder said it had achieved breakthroughs in the core technologies of its independently developed liquid cargo handling system for LCO2 vessels.
This system enables “efficient and safe loading/unloading of liquid carbon dioxide while effectively regulating cargo hold pressure and temperature.”
Hudong-Zhonghua also secured an AiP certificate from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a 100,500-cbm NO96 ethane carrier.
Featuring GTT’s NO96 membrane-type containment system, this VLEC achieves an evaporation rate of just 0.09 percent per day—approximately 20 percent lower than independent liquid cargo type B tanks, according to the Chinese shipbuilder.
The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel ethane propulsion system that meets stringent global emission standards while “substantially” lowering operational costs.
The vessel also has the capability to transport diverse liquid cargoes, including ethylene, propylene, and LPG, and features LNG-ready functionality, Hudong-Zhonghua said.
