Wood scores Rio Grande LNG maintenance gig

Aberdeen-based consulting and engineering firm Wood has secured a ten-year contract with US LNG developer NextDecade to deliver maintenance solutions at the latter's Rio Grande LNG facility under development near Brownsville, Texas.

Wood said in a statement that the contract is “significant” but it did not disclose the contract price.

Under the contract, Wood will provide “comprehensive maintenance services to support safe, reliable operations at the approximately 1,000-acre site.”

Wood is currently implementing mechanical integrity programs for the facility and consulting on operational readiness.

According to Wood, the contract will support the creation of more than 100 new jobs, with a focus on hiring from the local community and investing in US workforce development.

NextDecade is expanding its Rio Grande LNG facility with additional trains.

The company recently initiated the pre-filing process with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the sixth liquefaction train and an additional marine berth at its Rio Grande LNG terminal in the Port of Brownsville, Texas.

NexDecade previously said that the sixth train is being developed adjacent to Train 5, inside the Rio Grande LNG site’s existing levee.

According to the firm, Train 6 operations could potentially begin as early as 2032, depending on the timeline for permits, commercialization, and financing.

In October, NextDecade made the final investment decision on the fifth train at its Rio Grande LNG facility.

This FID came just over a month after NextDecade made a final investment decision on the fourth train.

Train 5 brings the total expected LNG production capacity under construction at Rio Grande LNG to approximately 30 mtpa.
