MISC orders LNG carrier trio at Hudong-Zhonghua

Malaysia’s LNG shipping player MISC, a unit of Petronas, has ordered three liquefied natural gas carriers from Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua.

Hudong-Zhonghua announced in a statement that the shipbuilding deal was signed on January 30.

The Chinese shipbuilder will build three 174,000-cbm LNG carriers for MISC.

Hudong-Zhonghua also said that the deal includes three optional vessels.

Following delivery, the LNG carriers will serve MISC’s parent Petronas under charter deals.

MISC said in a separate announcment on February 3 that it has received a letter of award from Petronas LNG for the long-term time charters of the three newbuild LNG carriers.

The charters are for 20 years.

2029

Hudong-Zhonghua did not reveal the pricing details or delivery dates.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that each vessel is expected to be worth between $235 million and $240 million.

Hudong-Zhonghua is expected to deliver the LNG carriers in 2029.

According to Hudong-Zhonghua, the LNG carriers under this contract are the fifth-generation Changheng series vessels independently developed and designed by the shipbuilder.

The vessels in these series feature GTT’s NO96 Super+ containment tech and WinGD X-DF 2.0 engines.

Hudong-Zhonghua said this order is expected to reach 10 vessels, with the first batch of 3+3 vessels being “swiftly” finalized.

The Chinese shipbuilder noted that it already cooperated with MISC and Petronas on LNG carrier projects.

MISC, as part of a consortium, previously ordered LNG carriers at Hudong-Zhonghua as part of the giant QatarEnergy shipbuilding program.

10 LNG carriers in a month

This order comes just a bit more than a week after Hudong-Zhonghua secured an order from George Economou-led TMS Group.

Under this contract, Hudong-Zhonghua will build four 174,000-cbm LNG carriers for TMS Cardiff Gas.

The contract also includes two optional vessels.

In addition, Hudong-Zhonghua won an order last month from Nigeria LNG’s shipping unit Bonny Gas Transport (BGT)

Hudong-Zhonghua will also build three LNG carriers for BGT, marking the first collaboration between China and Africa in the field of LNG carrier construction.

In total, the Chinese shipbuilder won orders for 10 firm LNG carriers in a month.
