BP to deliver carbon offset LNG cargo to Sempra’s Mexico terminal

A unit of the UK-based energy giant BP will deliver a carbon offset LNG cargo to Sempra’s Energía Costa Azul terminal in Mexico.

BP Gas Marketing and Sempra’s units Sempra LNG and IEnova have entered into a contract for the delivery and receipt of the companies’ first carbon offset or carbon-neutral LNG cargo.

According to a statement by US LNG operator and energy firm Sempra, BP would deliver the carbon offset cargo to the Costa Azul terminal on July 1.

In addition, BP will use its GHG quantification methodology to estimate carbon dioxide and methane emissions associated with the LNG cargo, from wellhead to discharge terminal.

BH has developed the methodology following relevant international standards. The firm may update it from time to time, according to the statement.

Moreover, BP would offset these estimated emissions by retiring a corresponding amount of carbon credits. The credits will come from a Mexican afforestation project from BP’s vetted portfolio of offsets on behalf of Sempra LNG, the statement said.

Sempra LNG and IEnova are currently constructing liquefaction facilities at the exciting ECA import terminal.

The venture announced a final investment decision on the $2 billion LNG project that includes one 3.25 mtpa train in November last year.
