US energy company AES said it has received the first carbon-neutral LNG cargo at its Andres import terminal in the Dominican Republic.
AES said the carbon-neutral LNG cargo arrived on July 22 at the AES Andres terminal from the US, but it did not reveal any additional information on the shipment.
The 154,500-cbm LNG Unity, managed by France’s Gazocean, delivered the cargo from Sempra’s Cameron liquefaction and export plant, its AIS data shows.
This marks the first carbon-neutral LNG shipment for the Caribbean and the region, according to AES.
The move is a part of a new offering that would allow AES customers to purchase credits and “use a fuel that will fully offset their carbon footprint,” the firm said in a statement.
“Availability of carbon-neutral energy will allow AES Dominicana’s customers to meet their green energy goals,” the firm said.
The AES Andres terminal provides regasified LNG for power plants as well as customers in the industrial and transportation sectors.
AES said it would offset the carbon footprint of the cargo, including extraction, production, and shipping, with carbon credits coming from the company’s other renewable energy projects around the world.
In addition, the firm said it also plans to replicate this solution in other markets around the world. These include countries such as Panama where it operates the Colon LNG facility, Vietnam, and other markets.
AES has set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions from electricity sales by 2040.
