Total in first carbon-neutral LNG delivery

France-based Total said Tuesday it has delivered its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo to CNOOC’s Dapeng regasification facility in China.

The energy giant said it loaded the shipment at the Inpex-operated Ichthys LNG plant in Australia. The cargo landed at the Dapeng facility on September 29.

Carbon-neutral means that the duo have offset the amount of CO2 associated with the whole carbon footprint of the cargo.

This includes the production, liquefaction, shipping, regasification, and end-use through VCS (verified carbon standards) certified emission reduction projects.

Wind and forests for LNG carbon neutrality

Total said it offset the carbon footprint of this LNG shipment with VCS emissions certificates financing two projects.

The first is the Hebei Guyuan wind project which aims to reduce emissions from coal-based power generation in northern China.

Furthermore, the second project is the Kariba REDD+ forest protection project with a goal of protecting Zimbabwe’s forests, Total said.

Laurent Vivier, Total gas chief said this cargo represents a “new step as we seek to support our customers towards carbon neutrality.”

“The development of LNG is essential to meet the growth in global demand for energy while reducing the carbon intensity of the energy products consumed,” he said.
