Hanwha Ocean to build HMM’s LNG-fueled containerships for $732 million

South Korean shipping firm HMM has placed an order for four LNG dual-fuel container vessels at compatriot shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean.

Hanwha Ocean announced the order for four container vessels, each with a capacity of approximately 13,000 teu, on Friday.

These vessels are scheduled for delivery by February 2029.

Moreover, HMM will pay approximately 1.07 trillion won ($732 million) to Hanwha Ocean for this order.

Hanwha Ocean did not mention that the vessels will be LNG-powered.

However, HMM said last month that it had decided to place orders for 12 LNG dual-fuel container vessels and two very large crude carriers.

According to HMM, the total investment is worth $2.82 billion, or 4.3 trillion won, and it expects to complete the project by April 2029.

The firm said that the LNG dual-fuel container vessels will each have a capacity of 13,000 teu, but it did not provide further details.

Earlier this week, HMM placed orders for eight LNG dual-fuel container vessels at two HD Hyundai yards.

Under the first order, HD Hyundai Samho will build six LNG dual-fuel container vessels, each with a capacity of 13,400 teu.

These vessels are scheduled for delivery by April 2029.

HMM will pay approximately 1.6 trillion won ($1.09 billion) to HD Hyundai Samho for this order.

Under the second order, HD Hyundai Heavy will build two LNG dual-fuel container vessels of the same size.

These vessels are scheduled for delivery by July 2028.

The HD Hyundai Heavy vessels are worth 534.6 billion won ($364 million).
