HMM revealed the investment decision in a stock exchange filing on Thursday.
According to HMM, the total investment is worth $2.82 billion, or 4.3 trillion won, and it expects to complete the project by April 2029.
The firm said that the LNG dual-fuel container vessels will each have a capacity of 13,000 teu, but it did not provide further details.
Several local media reports, citing a statement by HMM, said that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build eight LNG dual-fuel vessels, while Hanwha Ocean will build four vessels.
The order for just the LNG dual-fuel container ships is worth approximately 3 trillion won ($2.11 billion).
These vessels will add to HMM’s existing fleet of nine methanol-fueled and two LNG-fueled vessels.
LNG Prime reported last week, citing shipbuilding sources and brokers, that HMM has selected compatriot shipbuilders HD Hyundai Heavy and Hanwha Ocean to build 12 LNG dual-fuel container vessels.
In August, this publication reported that HMM launched a tender for six firm plus six optional LNG dual-fuel container ships.
The Hanwha Ocean vessels are expected to feature type high-manganese LNG tanks.
On the other hand, the LNG fuel tanks of the HD Hyundai Heavy vessels are expected to be equipped with GTT’s Mark III Flex containment tech.
