Sources told LNG Prime on Tuesday that ONE is in discussions for eight LNG dual-fuel container vessels with yards.
The vessels will have a capacity of 16,000 teu.
According to the sources, the final decision on this order is expected this month.
South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy is tipped to be in the pole position to secure this order.
No further details regarding the potential order have been revealed.
Based on container vessel orders in China and South Korea in 2025, this order could be worth about $1.6 billion.
If confirmed, these vessels would be the first LNG dual-fuel containerships in ONE’s fleet, the sources said.
However, ONE’s shareholders, NYK, MOL, and K Line, all operate large LNG carrier fleets and are building fleets of LNG dual-fuel vessels to comply with regulations and slash emissions.
ONE’s website says that the Singapore-headquartered company operates a fleet of more than 260 vessels, with an international network of over 165 services to 120 countries.
DNV’s latest data shows that orders for LNG dual-fuel containerships continue to dominate in the newbuilding sector.
According to DNV, there were 72 orders for LNG-powered vessels during the first four months of this year.
DNV previously said that a record of 264 LNG-powered ships were ordered in 2024.
In 2024, 69 percent of all containership orders were for ships capable of being powered by alternative fuels, driven by cargo owners responding to consumer demands for more sustainable practices and liner companies preparing to replace older tonnage, it said.
