Petronas says delivers carbon-neutral LNG cargo to Hiroshima Gas

Malaysian energy giant Petronas said it has delivered a carbon-neutral liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo to Japan’s Hiroshima Gas.

Malaysia LNG, a unit of Petronas and the operator of the giant 30 mtpa LNG complex in Bintulu, supplied the shipment.

Petronas said in a statement on Monday the LNG cargo marks the first carbon-neutral LNG shipment for Hiroshima Gas, but it did not provide any additional information regarding the delivery.

Hiroshima Gas has a supply deal with Malaysia LNG and gets the fuel at its Hatsukaichi facility in Chugoku, Japan.

It said in a separate statement on December 27 that it would receive its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo at the Hatsukaichi terminal on January 2.

The firm said it would sell the carbon-neutral shipment to its city gas customers as of April 2022.

Petronas VP of LNG marketing and trading, Shamsairi Ibrahim, said the new shipment boosts the company’s 16-year relationship with Hiroshima Gas.

“Providing cleaner energy solutions through carbon offsets will not only positively impact the LNG industry but will also create sustainable value for businesses, societies and the world at large,” he said.

Hiroshima Gas senior executive officer, Kazunori Tamura, said the company’s business as a city gas supplier “is seeing an increasing need to offer carbon-neutral city gas to our end-buyers.”

“Petronas’ ability to provide such solution is certainly essential to ensure we are on track in our sustainability goals,” Tamura said.

In August last year, Petronas delivered its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo to Japan’s Shikoku Electric.

After that, the Malaysian firm also signed a deal to supply three carbon-neutral LNG cargoes to China’s Shenergy.
