Two QatarEnergy LNG carriers named in China

China’s Hudong-Zhonghua hosted a naming ceremony for two 174,000-cbm LNG carriers built as part of the massive QatarEnergy shipbuilding program.

The two LNG carriers in question are Mihzem and Idd Al Shargi.

These are the fifth and sixth LNG carriers built by a consortium comprising Japan’s NYK, K Line, Malaysia’s MISC, and China’s CLNG for QatarEnergy.

MISC will manage the new vessels.

Mihzem is named after the Maydan Mahzam field, one of the first offshore oil fields discovered in Qatar, while Idd Al Shargi is named after an offshore field discovered in 1960, located east of Doha.

The vessels are equipped with the X-DF 2.1 iCER engine, a dual-fuel engine that uses fuel oil and boil-off gas as fuel, and GTT’s NO96 L03+ membrane containment system.

In addition, the 299-meter-long LNG carriers are also equipped with a reliquefaction device with a capacity of 1.5 ton/h that uses surplus boil-off gas.

Earlier this year, Hudong-Zhonghua delivered the 174,000-cbm LNG carrier, Al Tuwar, the first vessel in this series, and also the first LNG carrier that NYK is involved in building in China.

In August, the JV named Fat’h Al Khair, the third vessel in this series built for QatarEnergy by Hudong-Zhonghua, while South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries delivered Al Zuwair to the JV during the same month.

This delivery marked the first delivery of these QatarEnergy vessels built at HD Hyundai Heavy for the JV.

In total, the JV will deliver 12 new LNG carriers to QatarEnergy.
