GTT confirms tank order for 12 new CMA CGM’s LNG containerships

France’s GTT said it would design the fuel tanks for the twelve LNG-powered containerships compatriot CMA CGM recently ordered in China.

China’s Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan Shipyard will each build six LNG-powered ships. Hudong will build 13,000 TEU ships while Jiangnan will construct 15,000 TEU vessels.

The yards will deliver the vessels between the last quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2024.

As previously reported, the LNG tanks of the new ships will be fitted with GTT’s Mark III membrane containment technology.

In addition, GTT said all of the tanks will have a capacity of 14,000 cbm of LNG.

The order is similar to the five 15,000 TEU vessels Jiangan is already building for CMA CGM, GTT said.

GTT also delivered the tanks for the nine 23,000 TEU vessels Hudong and Jiangnan are building for CMA CGM. However, these giants feature the world’s largest LNG fuel tanks with a capacity of 18,600 cbm.

CMA CGM is currently the world’s largest operator and promoter of LNG-powered container vessels.

The shipping group expects to have 44 LNG-powered ships in its fleet by 2024.
