Deltamarin wins design gig for Stena’s LNG-powered trio

Finland-based Deltamarin, a part of China Merchants Group, said it has secured contracts to design three Stena’s E-Flexer class LNG-powered ferries.

The firm said on Friday it signed contracts for the complete design packages with China Merchants Jinling shipyard (Weihai), which will build the LNG-powered RoPax vessels.

These are the 10th, 11th and 12th Stena E-Flexer vessels for two different clients.

To remind, French shipping firm Brittany Ferries signed a deal with Sweden’s Stena RoRo for two new LNG-powered ferries while Canada’s Marine Atlantic will charter one vessel.

The Marine Atlantic vessel has LNG dual-fuel engines and a battery hybrid solution to minimize emissions.

On the other side, both ships for Brittany Ferries will also feature LNG propulsion, meaning that they can run on LNG, biogas or other new fuels such as ammonia, according to Deltamarin.

In addition, the ships will have a large battery hybrid solution of 10 MWh for propulsion and maneuvering in port and an 8 MW electric shore connection for charging the batteries.

Delatamarin said it would start the design work immediately at its offices in Finland. The firm expects to complete the work in 2022.

Moreover, the Chinese yard will deliver the two Brittany Ferries’ vessels in 2024 and 2025 while the third vessel will join Marine Atlantic in 2024.
