Hudong-Zhonghua gets DNV OK for new LNG carrier

Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua has received approvals from classification society DNV for three new vessel designs, including a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier.

According to DNV, the approval in principle certificates were presented for a 102,000-cbm NO96 very large ethane carrier (VLEC), a 174,000-cbm ice-strengthened LNG carrier, and an 8,000-teu LNG-fueled container vessel.

DNV did not provide further details regarding the vessel designs.

The classification society noted that an approval in principle (AiP) is an independent evaluation of a concept based on a predefined framework of requirements.

It confirms the feasibility of the design and ensures there are no significant technical obstacles hindering its implementation.

Hudong-Zhonghua recently received approvals from classification societies, including DNV, for a three-tank LNG carrier design.

The LNG carrier will have a capacity of 201,000 cbm, while its tanks will be equipped with GTT’s NO96 Super+ containment technology.

Hudong-Zhonghua continues to boost its LNG shipbuilding capacity, and it recently delivered its 50th LNG carrier.

The vessel is the 174,000-cbm LNG carrier, Al Tuwar, built under the massive QatarEnergy shipbuilding program, which includes the construction of 128 ships.

Hudong-Zhonghua delivered eight large LNG carriers last year, setting a new record for the Chinese shipbuilding industry.

In 2023, Hudong-Zhonghua delivered six LNG carriers.

The shipbuilder previously said it plans to deliver more than 10 large LNG vessels in 2025.
