Dutch LNG supplier Titan has completed the first two ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations in Germany’s Hamburg.
According to a social media post by Titan, the firm achieved the first-ever STS LNG bunkering operation in Hamburg on July 31, followed by the second operation on August 14.
The 6200-cbm LNG bunkering vessel, Optimus, owned by Estonia’s Elenger and chartered by Titan, delivered liquefied natural gas to Van Oord’s LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredger, Vox Ariane, during both of the operations.
Optimus supplied a total of 808 cbm of LNG to Vox Arianne during the operation on August 14, Titan said.
Van Oord took delivery of this vessel last year, the first of three LNG-powered TSHD dredgers.
Besides Van Oord, Titan joined forces with Cruise Gate Hamburg for these two bunkering operations, it said.
Titan now has added another LNG bunkering location to its potrfolio.
Carbon insetting
Besides this move, Titan said in a separate statement that it has issued the first LNG-based carbon insets in cooperation with 123Carbon, the first independent blockchain-based carbon insetting platform for the transport sector.
“Carbon insetting enables fuel suppliers and vessel operators to transfer the environmental benefits of clean, lower carbon intensity fuels throughout the maritime value chain to freight forwarders and shippers,” Titan said.
Caspar Gooren, director zero-carbon at Titan, said that “insetting can be an effective means of expediting the energy transition in shipping, which is currently blocked by price levels; fossil fuels remain cheaper than renewable fuels.”
“The insetting system helps to finance this price gap. It forms a new carbon economy: a new system that can incentivize the use of cleaner fuel alternatives,” he said.
