Wartsila to supply equipment for Stena’s LNG-powered vessels

Finland’s Wartsila said on Tuesday it would provide a broad scope of its solutions to three new LNG-fueled vessels that are being built for Sweden’s Stena RoRo at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai.

Wartsila said the LNG-powered ships would feature the company’s engines and propulsion machinery and the yard would deliver them in 2024 and 2025.

According to Wartsila, the tech firm booked the order in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The vessels, each around 200 meters long, are part of a series of E-Flexer class ferries. Stena ordered the ships for European line service, Wartsila said.

Each ship will feature Wartsila’s 46DF dual-fuel main engines and 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines.

The order also includes two gearboxes, two controllable pitch propellers, tunnel thrusters, and fuel gas supply system, the company said.

In addition, Wartsila will also supply the ships with Nacos navigation and automation, as well as integrated control alarm and monitoring system together with the performance monitoring system.

Wartsila expects to start delivering the equipment to the Chnese yard in the fourth quarter of 2022.

To remind, French shipping firm Brittany Ferries signed a deal last year with Stena RoRo for two LNG-powered ferries while Canada’s Marine Atlantic will charter one vessel.
