Liqvis, a unit of energy firm Uniper, will next year start offering bio-LNG at its filling stations in Germany as part of a deal revealed on Thursday.
The LNG filling station operator said it has joined forces with EnviTec Bioenergie Güstrow, a unit of EnviTec Biogas, on the bio-LNG project.
EnviTec will produce the fuel at its biogas plant in Güstrow. The German firm will convert the facility to be able to produce bio-LNG as it now only makes biomethane, according to Liqvis.
Moreover, Liqvis said its filling stations would start receiving bio-LNG in October 2022 for onward distribution to the heavy goods vehicle sector in Germany.
Liqvis has five operational LNG filling stations in Germany and three under development. In addition, it has two filling stations in France.
Olaf von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas said the conversion work on the Güstrow site requires investment in a CO2 liquefaction plant and an LNG system for biomethane liquefaction.
The project would cost somewhere between 35 and 40 million euros ($48.7 million), he said.
Sebastian Gröblinghoff, managing director of Liqvis said the supply agreement with EnviTec marks a “major milestone” on the company’s way towards further decarbonising its product portfolio.
“Starting in 2022, our partnership with this established and experienced biogas generation company will also let us offer a fully carbon-neutral product at an attractive price for the very first time,” he said.
