South Korea’s Samsung Heavy secures order for LNG carrier duo

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a new order to build two liquefied natural gas carriers, just three days after it won an order for one LNG vessel.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Monday that it will build the new LNG vessels for an unidentified owner in Oceania.

The order is valued at 770.1 billion won ($514 million), or approximately $257 million per vessel.

Samsung Heavy will deliver the LNG carriers by September 2028.

The shipbuilder did not provide further details regarding the new contract.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that Denmark’s Celsius Tankers, a unit of Celsius Shipping, appears to have returned to Samsung Heavy for more vessels.

Last month, Samsung Heavy secured an order for one LNG carrier valued at $255 million tied to Celsius Tankers.

The shipbuilder will deliver this LNG carrier by May 2028.

Growing orderbook

Including this order, Samsung Heavy has secured $2.9 billion in orders for 14 vessels this year.

This represents 21 percent of its annual order target of $13.9 billion.

Moreover, this is the fourth LNG carrier order Samsung Heavy announced in 2026.

On Friday, Samsung Heavy announced that it will build one LNG carrier for an Oceania-based owner and deliver it by April 2029.

This $252 million order is tied to London-based Purus Marine, which also ordered two LNG carriers in December last year.

In January this year, Samsung Heavy won an order for two LNG carriers from an unidentified owner in Bermuda.

This order is valued at $505 million, or approximately $252.5 million per vessel, and the shipbuilder will deliver these LNG carriers by January 2029.

This order is tied to interests associated with JP Morgan.

Last year, Samsung Heavy secured orders for 11 LNG carriers.
